As there are different subjects in school, there are different subjects in gymnastics. Four for women, five for men.

The first women's subject you learn is floor. On floor, you tumble and flip and twist through the air and on the ground.

After floor comes beam. Beam is a test of balance, skill, and senses. It is like floor, but 4.5 feet up and on a 3 inch piece of wood. Most skills used on beam are just cleaner skills from floor.

Then, there are bars. This subject requires balance as well as strength and flexibility. You spin around the bar, occasionaly release, and fly from one bar to the other and back again.

Last of all is vault. This takes massive coordination as well as great strength. You run, do a specific prep, push of the vault, and twist through the air.

Now starts men. As well as women, men have floor, too.

Instead of beam, men have the horse. This takes strength and eye to hand coordination.

Again, as well as women, men have bars, however, men only use one bar.

Men have rings. This takes strength and flexibility. They show their strength by holding themselves in positions while holding a ring in each hand.

Last of all, men have parallel bars. This uses strength so men can hoist themselves up and let themselves down quickly but smoothly.
